Fun Football for age 3-6 years

Shooting Stars is the first stage of Waterside Karori’s football pathway for girls and boys aged 3-6. It is about having fun, making friends, and learning new skills.

At this age your young footballer might need assistance from a parent during sessions. Or they might be fine on their own! It may also differ from week to week. Sometimes it can take a while before the training wheels come off – but with perseverance it will happen!

As your child gets older, and with more ball time under their belt, they will become more comfortable during sessions and develop their skills. This will mean there is a bit of a difference between players’ ability. That’s ok – just go at your own pace!
Sessions are 45-50 mins long. The structure is to start in a group with a ball each, warming up and practicing some ball manipulation. Fun activities will follow focused on individual skills development. Coaches are unable to always give players individual attention, but just shout out to a coach if you are giving parental assistance and need some help.
For the more confident groups we finish the session with a game.

We split Shooting Stars into groups according to confidence (not age).
Players are welcome to move between the three groups to find the best fit.
Sonics: For players who are new to football and may need regular parental support.
Comets: For players gaining independence and able to follow coach instructions.
Earlier Group (Novas & Astros): For confident players who follow instructions independently and enjoy game play.

Terms run throughout the year.

What does a Shooting Star need? Football boots are recommended, mainly for grip in the winter morning grass. These can be hard to source, but Rebel sport usually has boots available for smaller feet. There is also a boot bank in the clubrooms. Please ensure you bring a water bottle to keep your little one hydrated, and a pair of gloves is recommended when it gets really cold.

If the weather is not playing ball, we will cancel the session (communicated via email on the morning) . We understand that at other times it may be just too cold, and you want to opt out. The clubrooms café is a nice place to have a hot drink instead!
